I wanted to post this saturday evening but tireness got me down in a split second. I've visited the Pre-release of V for Vendetta, a new movie from The Matrix's Wachowski Brothers.
Since I've got a cultural report on this movie as well, this should combine pretty nicely. Okay, so here we go.
V For Vendetta
People shouldn't be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.
Got yuou interested? Good. This movie is about a semi - futuristic England which has fallen into a totalitarian police state after the Iraq war hopped over from Syria and other Middle East countries to England. The once mighty America is, as they say in the movie, "One big lepra (Sp?) - colony" which should be "teached a lesson" about what they did to the British fourhundred years before (American Revolution, of course.). It doesn't form the headline of the story though.
In the story, a masked person called "V" (Hugo Weaving), fights these tyrants in a vendetta like you know from the Mafia: Entire annihilation of a family, or in this case, everyone in command of the police state. A despot rules with iron fist, hitler - style, only with our fine CCTV camera's, night curfews, Gestapo - styled secret police called Fingermen and secret projects causing almost one hundred thousands dead in the UK. One night of the curfew, a women gets bumped in with some of these nice fellows, and nearly gets arrested. Like you'd expect, our protagonist, V, begins with a powerful line while he walks out of the shadows. He keeps this up through the fight and gives a headstart that shows he can really kick ass, almost litteraly.
So who is "V" actually? He introduces himself in a way you'd think he was a madman; A well - spoken, asskicking karatestyle madman, that is. He explains in ways you'd expect from Shakespeare or Macbeth his motives and wants, which lost everone in the moviehouse because no one could resist a smile or even a laugh.
This is just one of the moments in the movie which soften up the partial Film Noire with a hilarious or fun scene that gives you much more than just a big actionmovie feel with tons of info -- Because you're going to get a lot of info through the movie, without boring it. Maybe a bit hard to follow sometimes as he speaks in old english partially, but really gives character.
I'm trying not to reveal or ruin anything about the movie so I'll keep this a bit less in depth as you may understand.
But if there's something anyone would notice, it must be the Explosions. Yes, with Capital E for a reason. There's a lot of blowing up going around in the movie and it's done with total precision. It is sometimes combined with great moments of doubts to what V's actually doing but gives great value just because of how other characters respond to V's almost eccentric character.
Next point that you must have felt sneaking in, characterplay. I have to say, it's incredible. The way how characters act, do, walk, look, almost everything, is much better than you'd just expect. Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving are not just the only ones. Hugo's role as Elrond in Lord of the Rings has this twist you wouldn't expect. Or maybe... It is a movie from the Wachowski Brothers, of The Matrix, so yeah.
The Plot. Well, I have to say, there's nary a movie that can do something like this to me: One beer and a Breezer and I've got a headache of all the info. It's immense. Even more than the movies Equilibrium, The Matrix, Minority Report and other remarkable movies. I'm not a too - light drinker, nor a binge drinker, but I would suggest to keep off the liquor because it might just make your head explode of the info/alcohol combination. Just might, haven't seen any head exploding yet, so that shouldn't be too much.
Sound. There's a great use for sound, and the special effects are really great. Action scenes in the style of the Matrix combined with the speed of fighting in Equilibrium and a music score which is subtle and really enhancing the whole feeling to the movie get together nicely, and never I have seen a scene switch which didn't fit in.
Use of special effects. Slight part above, but in this case, graphical effects. The makers use a special technology to combine several shots into a full shot, which happens several times and feels very naturally.
It's hard to give rates to movies like this as it's partially based on opinion. Some people will like it, but others will turn away from it. But since all these known actors and filmmakers have been coming together for this movie, and that it's actually a Hollywood movie as well, I expect many moviepapers, moviewebsites - and forums will be cheering out loud for it the coming days.
And I also think some newspapers will bash this movie and acclaim Flight 93 as best movie of the month/year, but that's their choice. At least I don't get payed to force opinions.
V For Vendetta Verdict:
9.5/10
